overview

The Atlantic Forest of Brazil is one of the most endangered biomes in the world, yet it remains astonishingly rich. Despite heavy fragmentation, new species continue to be discovered in this complex and resilient ecosystem. Found only in this biome are 1,023 bird species, with nearly 200 endemics—making it second only to the Amazon in biodiversity in the Americas.

In São Paulo state, we explore one of the largest and best-preserved remnants of this extraordinary forest.

Mist drifts over the mountains, waterfalls cut through deep green valleys, and every trail feels alive with sound. For birders, it’s an incredibly rewarding place. At the locally owned lodges where we stay, specially designed feeders attract colorful flocks of tanagers—Green-headed, Brazilian, Red-necked, and Gilt-edged—offering stunning, close views and wonderful photography opportunities. Toucans and endemic Spot-billed Toucanets visit nearby fruiting trees, while hummingbird feeders remain busy throughout the day.

Our comfortable rainforest lodges are run by local families and surrounded by easy trails perfect for relaxed birding. Meals are fresh and homemade, with many ingredients coming straight from the lodge gardens, and juices prepared daily from natural tropical fruits.

Guided by knowledgeable local women guides who know the forest intimately, we explore at an enjoyable pace while supporting local communities and contributing to the regional economy through responsible tourism. This is more than a birding trip—it’s an authentic experience in one of the most important and beautiful forests in the world.

Morning begins early on the sound of many different species of birds singing from every direction. When you open your room’s door the first impression is you are in a bird concert. Seriously!

After  delicious breakfast we’ll have the option to go straight to the feeders to see and photograph many birds and hummingbirds that visit the station or take a walk in the trails in the forest. The variety not only of birds but other wildlife is incredible.

One of the big bonus from this place is the opportunity to also see Brazilian tapir. With a nocturnal and crepuscular behavior this big strange looking mammal is often seen next to the lodge enjoying some snacks (bananas). It is a great opportunity to admire and photograph this largest wild mammal of South America!  If luck is on our side, we might encounter the mama Tapir strolling through the forest with her calf close behind.
